Mosaic, a newcomer family resource network, is a vital partner in the Knox Hub. Their offices are directly across Central Park from us – and we house many of their programs. They provide English classes with quality child minding for newcomer parents. The classes help participants develop English language skills and a social network while their children socialise in a safe and educational environment. Their goal is to help newcomers adjust to life in Canada so that they can become active, participating members of their new community. For more information go to: http://www.mosaicnet.ca/
In addition to Mosaic’s other programs at Knox, they offer the HIPPY program on our second floor.
Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) works with families to support parents, primarily mothers, in their critical role as their child’s first and most important teacher. HIPPY strengthens families and communities by empowering mothers to actively prepare their children for success in school. HIPPY is a unique family literacy system that blends together a number of paths to benefit newcomer/multicultural families. The paths include: developing parents’ abililty, skills, and attitudes required to effectively educate their preschool children, supportive nurturing and education of preschool children, employing newcomer parents as home visitors and integrating socially isolated parents into mainstream society.
